Article No. M-156

By many of us seen as the holy grail of the automotive history or at least the history of Ferrari. Only 39 were built, including 3 cars which benefited from a new and more aerodynamic body style and an enlarged engine capacity.

Development of the Ferrari 250 GTO (‘gran turismo omologate’) started with the underpinnings of the 250 GT/SWB. Chassis wise there were not a lot changes but modifications were made to the drive train, rear axle, center of gravity and obviously that famous body.

It was the gifted engineer Giotto Bizzarrini that started the engineering for the 250 GTO but he left together with most of the Ferrari engineering and development team during the so called ‘palace revolution’ at Ferrari to eventually set up his own company. Bizzarrini was succeeded by Mauro Foghieri, who set to work together with the coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti and completed the 250 GTO project in 1962.

The Ferrari 250 GTO made its debut in the racing scene at the 12 hours of Sebring where it won its class and finished 2nd overall. From then the 250 GTO conquered the racing grounds, taking the constructors’ championships in 1962, 1963 and 1964.

All 250 GTOs are still in excistence and very well documentated. This model of CMC models represents chassis no. #3451GT. This 250 GTO is the fith built by Ferrari. It was sold to Italian gentleman racer Pietro Ferraro. Together with Giorgio Scarlatti, he drove the #3451GT promptly to a class victory and 4th overall in the 1962 Targa Florio. This 250 GTO is painted in the original colours Maroon with a white roof.

Again this model is world class. CMC models handcrafted 250 GTO’s are so incredible detailed that it is hard to believe that it is actual a scale model.
