After Porsche built their first 356 it developed the 365/2 for production. Opposed to the first 356 the 356/2 had the engine behind the back axle instead of the mid engine configuration. Most of the mechanical components however where still from VW. This ment that the steering, rear brakes, transmission, suspension clutch and off course the headlight all came from the VW parts catalogue. Front brakes were sourced from Lockheed.
The engine was bored out and Porsche fitted it with a high compression head so that the output was now 35-40 bhp instead of 25 bph. Main change was however that the car was now designed as a unitary tub unlike the prototype’s tubulur steel frame.
The so called ‘Gmünd’car (named after the initial factory location) all came with the now famous split window or ‘Knikscheibe’. Also the curved quaterlights and small accents strips between the front indicators can only be found and the 365/2 Gmünd cars. First customer car was bought by Mr. Rupprecht von Senger and had a convertible body made by Beutler.
After this initial first production run in 1949 production shifted to Stuttgart. In total 49 Gmünd cars were built; eight being convertibles.
This model by Cult resembles one of the Gmünd cars and is presented in lovely yellow with red interior. Model is made in HQ resin and has photoetched parts. A must have for every Porsche enthusiast!
